Little Auk

This Little Auk was just off St Martins quay this afternoon .

The Little Auk is the only Atlantic auk of its size, half the size of the Atlantic Puffin at 19–21 cm in length, with a 34–38 cm wingspan. Adult birds are black on the head, neck, back and wings, with white underparts. The bill is very short and stubby. They have a small rounded black tail. The lower face and fore neck become white in winter.

The flight is direct, with fast whirring wing beats due to the short wings. These birds forage for food like other auks by swimming underwater. They mainly eat crustaceans, especially copepods, but also other small invertebrates along with small fish.

I caught up again today with the Red-necked grebe I found yesterday .

I found this Red-necked grebe this afternoon near St Helens while I was running one of the Jet boats, it probably the same one that turned up in october last year but it hasn't been seen for over 6 weeks.

I went to Porth-loo this afternoon were this 1st winter Glaucous gull was still on the beach.

This 1st Winter Glaucous Gull has been on Porth-Loo beach the last 2 days.

The Glaucous Gull is a large gull which breeds in Arctic regions of the northern hemisphere and Atlantic coasts of Europe
